The Blind Men and the Elephant

Album: To All Purple Tree Trunks

Lyrics

v1) It was six men of Indostan to learning much inclined Who went to see the elephant, though all of them were blind That each by observation might satisfy his mind, his mind That each by observation might satisfy his mind

v2) The first approached the elephant and happening to fall Against his broad and sturdy side at once began to call "God bless me! but this elephant is very like a wall, a wall God bless me! but this elephant is very like a wall. That’s all..."

v3) The second, feeling of the tusk cried “Ho! what have we here? So very round and smooth and sharp? To me ‘tis mighty clear This wonder of an elephant is very like a spear, yes a spear Not a wall (no, not at all!) - To me ‘tis mighty clear! That this wonder of an elephant is very like a spear!” (Do you get my point?)

v4) The third approached the animal and happening to take The squirming trunk within his hands thus boldly up and spake: “I see,” said he, “the elephant is similar to a snake, a snake Not a spear (that’s pretty clear!) and not a wall (no, not at all!) Now gimme a break! I see,” said he, “the elephant is similar to a snake!” (Plain as the nose on your face!)

v5) The fourth reached out his eager hand and felt about the knee “What most this wondrous beast is like is mighty plain,” said he “‘Tis clear enough this elephant reminds me of a tree, a tree! Not a snake (gimme a break!) not a spear (that’s pretty clear) and not a wall (no, not at all!) but obviously ‘Tis clear enough this elephant reminds me of a tree!” ( And that’s my firmly rooted opinion!)

v6) The fifth, who chanced to touch the ear cried “Even the blindest man Can tell what this resembles most; deny the fact who can This marvel of an elephant is exactly like a fan, a fan! Not a tree (obviously!) not snake (gimme a break!) not a spear (that’s pretty clear) and not a wall (no, not at all!) now get with it, man! This marvel of an elephant is exactly like a fan!” (I really don’t see what this whole flap is about!)

v7) The sixth no sooner had begun about the beast to grope Than, seizing on the swinging tail that fell within his scope “Ho, ho!” said he, “This elephant is like a piece of rope! A rope! Not a fan (get with it, man!) not a tree (obviously!) not snake (gimme a break!) Not a spear (that’s pretty clear) and not a wall (no, not at all!) You think I’m a dope?! I tell you that this elephant is like a piece of rope!” (And that should about wrap it up!)

v8) And so these men of Indostan disputed loud and long Each in his own opinion exceeding stiff and strong Though each was partly in the right ... and all were in the wrong!
